Samabaj, a city under Lake Atitlan

In 1996 Roberto Samayoa found a city under Lake Atitlan. This city sunk 1,700 years ago and was from the pre-classic Mayan period.

After 30 immersions in the lake, Roberto found the city. Today this place is known as “Samabaj”. The name is composed by the second name of the founder with the Mayan word “abaj”, which means rock. The city is 30 meters below and 500 meters from the edge.

There are three theories to explain the sunk of Samabaj, however there are signs that this didn’t mean the end of the community. People continued their lives in other places near the lake.
