History behind the cloth in Panajachel

People who live in towns near Lake Atitlan are not the same as their Mayan ancestors, but they have retained some old customs. They are kind people, concerned of nature, religious and skillful. Some of them work the land, while others dedicate their lives to produce amazing handicrafts for sale.

However, the beautiful cloth they use is not as the one they used in the past. When the Spanish came to the area, they imposed colorful cloth as a way of distinguish them between different towns. Nowadays, certain towns keep the colors that were assigned to them, but they have transformed this imposition into something gorgeous. They have added beautiful designs to their cloth that represent elements of nature.
